It seems everyone in the group was open to learning, shifting and healing and had profound insights to share either during a healing or meditation that were shared in the debriefing. The Healing Touch Program concept of “Therapeutic presence.” Since I completed Level 4, I was recently presented with an opportunity to acknowledge therapeutic presence in the most unlikely circumstance. During my working day at my job in the supermarket I was serving customers at the register as per usual. I suddenly realised that the customers at the end of my register were trying to get my attention. I looked down and saw a lady on the floor and she was clearly having a seizure. Alerting the manager to call an ambulance I rushed to her aid and knelt by her side. I was immediately filled with deep humility and as I listened with my heart I allowed my intuition to guide me. I placed my hands on her body while asking for divine help. I was feeling an overwhelming sense of calm and simply stayed with the lady. As I trusted the energy to do its work her seizure stopped and her breathing changed. I was feeling a deep sense of peace and compassion for this person who was so exposed in her vulnerability. Once the ambulance came I was able to return to my job at the register. As I disconnected with the lady I asked that she be assisted further and there in the row of customers was a lady who was wearing a name tag which read “critical care nurse.” Not being a nurse myself I was overcome with a feeling of gratitude and asked her to assist us with the lady on the floor. It was an unexpected emergency which had occurred, at the same time I understood that because I was able to connect with heart-centeredness I knew what to do to assist this lady until help arrived. Yes, I could not ask for her permission yet I could set my intention to be respectful and compassionate while staying centred and attuned. Also what I realised was that I was able to simply continue with my shift without feeling overcome with the trauma of the experience since I was able to set my intention to become grounded and disconnect from the experience. I became aware of how much I have learnt in my time practicing Healing Touch and therefore able to respond with a non-judgmental attitude. In fact, I see how I am becoming one with the practice of being a therapeutic presence, not only with a client in a formal session, also in the most unexpected situation. What is Healing Touch? Home Page How to become a Practitioner Janet Mentgen and the Healing Touch Story Janet Mentgen, RN, BSN was an energetically sensitive nurse. Her drive was to deepen and expand the connection between nurses and their patients. She saw the positive effect of touch while using various energy techniques and modalities. Janet began using her energy based healing skills in 1980. ​ Janet was a practicing nurse for 43 years. Her early work was with the U.S. Navy, then as an emergency room nurse, and then home health care nurse. Her real love of patients and the nurse connection began emerging as she developed her "healing touch" methods. She shared her methods by teaching continuing education classes for nurses at Red Rocks Community College in Lakewood, Colorado. Her research, with the application within her private practice, and her teaching of energy medicine earned her the Holistic Nurse of the Year Award from the American Holistic Nurses Association in 1988. ​ ​ The Janet Mentgen Story In 1989, Janet formally created Healing Touch as an energy medicine program. It began in 1990 as the Healing Touch certificate program sponsored through the American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) which coincided with the provider-ship of continuing education for nurses by the Colorado Nurses Association. In 1993, certification of Healing Touch Practitioners began and was administered by AHNA. That same year, Janet formed The Colorado Centre for Healing Touch dedicated to bringing Healing Touch to millions of people throughout the world. ​ In 2008 the certification process was moved to the Healing Touch Certification Board. Its purpose is to administer the Healing Touch certification process for Practitioners and Instructors. ​ In 1997, the Healing Touch Worldwide Foundation, Inc., was founded by Janet as a non-profit charitable organisation. Janet's intent for Healing Touch Worldwide Foundation was to receive and distribute funds to assist, encourage and advance the philosophy, objectives and techniques of Healing Touch therapy. This was primarily accomplished through funding of grants for research and humanitarian projects around the world. ​ Within these few short years, Janet Mentgen revolutionised the medical model to include a clinical approach to energy based therapy. Her legacy lives on through the Certified Instructors and Certified Practitioners and thousands of students who are bringing a holistic approach to healing. Healing Touch emphasizes compassionate, heart-centred care in which the provider and client are equal partners in facilitating wholeness. Healing Touch restores harmony, energy and balance within the human energy system and supports the self-healing process of becoming whole in body, mind, emotion and spirit. Healing Touch complements conventional health care and is used in collaboration with other approaches to health and healing. ​ Due to the extraordinary success of the program, the company began using its other legal name, Healing Touch Program™, in June of 2005. This change recognized the global expansion of Healing Touch in hospitals, communities, hospices, clinics, schools of nursing, and the long term care centers throughout North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Australia, Asia, and New Zealand. ​ To ensure the continued growth of the Healing Touch Program™, Janet transferred the ownership of the Healing Touch Program™ to her children; Bill, Lynn and Lisa in May of 2005. On September 10, at the 2005 annual International Healing Touch Conference held in Breckenridge, Colorado, Janet announced her retirement and the transfer of leadership to her children in the midst of 600 conference attendees. In terms of clinical and professional direction, Janet mentored Cynthia Hutchison, RN, DNSc, HTCP/I as her chosen Program Director from 2003 through to her death. She then passed on the directorship role to Cynthia in May of 2005 in sacred ceremony with HT instructors at Shadowcliff Retreat Center, the location where she birthed the idea of Healing Touch. ​ Securing her legacy, Janet died on September 15, 2005. ​ ​

What to Expect The first session involves a consultation in addition to the Healing Touch session. The practitioner will ask a series of questions about your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health, and will answer questions about Healing Touch. Then you lay fully clothed on a treatment table while the practitioner gently places his or her hands slightly above or on the body. The session generally lasts 40 to 60 minutes, and people frequently report feeling deeply relaxed and peaceful during and after the session. Because there may be a cumulative effect of using Healing Touch over time, regular sessions are recommended. ​ Where does the Healing Touch session take place? Healing Touch can be performed almost anywhere – in the home, hospitals, nursing homes, hospices or the practitioner place of business. ​ How many sessions are recommended? The number of sessions for Healing Touch is dependent upon the needs of the client. Often for a new client, three treatments are scheduled. After each session, the client's needs are reassessed to plan the care appropriately. This will include the need for further treatments, referrals to other professionals, and instruction in self-care as needed and in collaboration with the wishes of the client. How often would I have to be seen? If you have an acute condition, such as recent surgery or a recent injury, more benefit is derived by a Healing Touch treatment daily or every other day for three to five visits. If you have a chronic condition, the practitioner will suggest that you be seen once a week for three to five weeks as it sometimes takes up to three visits for there to be a noticeable benefit. How soon will I notice results? The energy shifts immediately with the integration, like a light being turned on in a dark room. The overall feeling of relaxation is commonly experienced. Pain relief is often reported after one session. Most people report that they feel much "lighter" after the session, that is because they literally are! Emotions such as depression, anger, guilt, etc. are often released. Once released, the void where those emotions were formerly held may be automatically filled with light, truth, love, forgiveness, and joy. With some issues, you will immediately notice they are no longer there because you are not worried about them anymore. That worry is replaced by peace. With other issues, although the energetic changes are in place, you may not recognize the change right away. ​ How long does a treatment/session last? A Healing Touch session can run from 15 to 60 minutes depending on the client's needs. Often, the first session, which involves a consultation might take about 90 minutes. Do I have to undress/disrobe to receive a session? No, you do not need to undress to receive a session. In Healing Touch sessions, the client will remain dressed but usually remove their shoes and any binding items such as a belt. Comfortable clothing is recommended. Is Healing Touch like getting a massage? The only way Healing Touch is like massage is that you lie on a treatment table for the session, if you choose. You can also sit on a chair to receive a treatment. Either way, you stay fully clothed but may be asked to remove your shoes. With massage, muscles are manipulated and pressure is applied. When doing Healing Touch the practitioner uses very light, gentle touch and/or makes sweeping movements with his/her hands near the body. What if I do not like to be touched? All the Healing Touch techniques can be done without the practitioner directly touching you and will be just as effective. If you do not feel comfortable during a Healing Touch session, feedback is always encouraged and welcome. Please speak up. If you do not feel comfortable, your practitioner can increase/decrease pressure; provide you with blanket/remove a blanket; let you adjust your position; and/or stop working on the part of your body that is giving you discomfort. Can I talk to my practitioner or listen to music during a session? That is up to you. When the environment permits, soothing music may be played during the session. A session is your time to relax and the goal is to provide you with an environment that helps you do just that. You may also feel free to speak with your practitioner during a session. This is your time, however, and many times patients choose to simply lie quietly and receive a treatment. Is Healing Touch for everybody/any age? Healing Touch is beneficial to everyone and works as a complementary therapy to conventional medicine and other therapies. You can be any age to receive Healing Touch – from newborn to the elderly. Because Healing Touch techniques are so gentle, and can do no harm, there is no age limit. Healing Touch can even work on babies still in the womb. Can Healing Touch be done long-distance? Yes, because energy is not limited by time or distance, Healing Touch works just as powerfully whether working with someone face-to-face or at a distance. How Can I find a Healing Touch Practitioner in my area? Search our on-line Healing Touch Practitioner Directory. The Directory lists all students, practitioner apprentices, and practitioners who have given permission to have their names listed. Do I need a referral? You do not need to be referred by a physician or other medical professional to receive a Healing Touch treatment. However, because Healing Touch is complementary to conventional medicine, some medical professionals may recommend that you receive Healing Touch treatments to improve your overall health and healing. How much do Healing Touch sessions cost? Healing Touch fees are similar to local massage therapy sessions. Sessions typically range from $40 - $150 a session depending on the experience of the practitioner. Some practitioners will offer package sessions for a reduced cost. Management Committee Lesley Pointon - President I have completed Level 4 in Healing Touch and regularly assist as a Helper in Level 1, 2 and 3 workshops. I live in Brisbane and am passionate about treating my family and friends and seeing improvements in their well-being. I have been associated with Healing Touch since 2014 and am currently serving as the President of the Australian Healing Touch Program Association Inc of which I am a Charter Member. I also assist at promotional events throughout the year and particularly enjoy assisting the other members of our Chapter at the ‘Homeless Connect’ days where we offer Healing Touch treatments to many less fortunate people within our Brisbane community. I love the beauty within Energy Healing and the joy and bliss I feel with each practice. My life purpose and dream is to practice and teach Healing Touch to as many people as possible, whether they are health professionals or lay people, so that eventually, Healing Touch will be known about and practised in every home, residential care facility and hospital in Australia. ​ Aileen Conradi - Hon. Secretary I am a Healing Touch Practitioner. I have been involved with Healing Touch since 2013 and more recently have been the Secretary of the Australian Healing Touch Professional Association Incorporated for the past two years. Although my working life has always been in administrative roles, I have always had an interest in alternative medicine and the healing arts. I have studied Massage, Touch for Health and completed short courses in Homeopathy and Aromatherapy. I love the simplicity of Healing Touch, practicing a Hara Alignment Meditation daily is just one of the wonderful techniques we can use to stay in a state of heart centeredness. I look forward to seeing the Healing Touch Program grow in Australia and being able to spend more time practicing this modality of healing. Gillian Robertson - Hon. Treasurer ​ Gillian is a Healing Touch Certified Practitioner & Certified Instructor and strives towards her goal of sharing Healing Touch with as many people as possible, so that they too can enjoy the benefits of this gentle and life-changing modality. She has worked extensively with energy therapies and has a passion to help others to improve and maintain their health and well-being. She has chosen to specialise in the gentle hands & heart-centred therapy of Healing Touch due to the many benefits her clients have experienced during and after HT sessions. Gillian has volunteered since September 2006 as a therapist providing Healing Touch, Reiki, and Hand & Foot massage to patients, family and carers at Solaris Cancer Care Centres, the Albany Hospice and in several major hospitals in Albany and Perth, Western Australia. In July 2007, she took up the role of Co-ordinator for the State of Western Australia and the Albany Lead for her local Healing Touch Program Chapter/Support group. Gillian currently instructs in Levels 1 and 2 of the Healing Touch Program curriculum; is a Mentor and former committee member of the HTP Ethics Committee, and Charter Member of HTPA and AHTPAI. Dorothy Dunshea - New South Wales Representative Dorothy lives in Sydney and is a charter member of the Australia Healing Touch Program Association Inc., where she has completed Level 3 in Healing Touch. When Dorothy received a Diploma in Shiatsu, it was in her studies that she discovered the importance and wonder of energy healing. Prior to her Shiatsu training, Dorothy has completed a Pastoral Care counselling course, Reiki I & II and Rosen Method Bodywork, she has also completed and then for 15 years assisted in personal growth courses involving Gestalt therapy. When Dorothy was introduced to Healing Touch she immediately felt a deeper connection. She knew that, that is what she had to do, to help people find their own inner peace, joy, love and self worth. Shelley Spicer - Western Australian Representative I'm a Student HTP Practitioner Level 3, Advanced 1& 2 living in the hills south west of Perth, Western Australia. I have been involved with Energy Medicine since 2013. I am a member of HTPA and Charter Member of Australian Healing Touch Program Association. I run meetings of the Perth Chapter and connect with the Albany Chapter in the south of Western Australia. I am involved in promotion days at expos and workshops. I have been volunteering HT sessions to local aged care facilities and like to work with people suffering trauma. I am honoured to serve as W.A. Rep for AHTPA "LOVE IS ALL THERE IS". This is the one constant in the universe and in HTP. Suzanne Doyle - Voting Committee Suzanne was raised in the Lamington National Park and now lives in Brisbane after returning from a number of years overseas living and working in London at the Australian High Commission. Suzanne has completed Level 3 in Healing Touch and was first introduced to this modality at a HT workshop presented by Instructor, Monica Nebauer for a women’s group where she demonstrated self-chakra connection. She retired at the end of 2020, after working at University of QLD for 25 years, mainly as administrator at the UQ Psychology Clinic. During this time, she completed part time studies in Toowoomba with a Certificate in Transpersonal and Emotional Release Counselling and a Diploma of Counselling from TAFE.
